BACALAR, MEXICO 5 Day: Hotel Makaaba

5 days
Tastemaker: Michaela Guzy
Day 1 :
  • ARRIVAL IN BACALAR Morning/Afternoon: Arrive in the Pueblo Magico (magical town) of Bacalar, known for the crystal blue lagoons. Check into the sustainable Hotel Makaaba, a Bohemian haven for those seeking eco-chic accommodations with a lively communal pool and bar vibe. The hotel is perfect place to work from during the day and serve organic local food. Evening: Enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel and grab honey-infused cocktails at the pool bar.
Day 2 :
  • SAILING THE LAGOON Morning/Afternoon: Have breakfast at the hotel before embarking on a sailing adventure with Magic Bacalar to explore the freshwater lagoons. Swim and snorkel all day in the crystal clear blue waters. Request that Magic Bacalar pack a picnic lunch with cold drinks for your day out on the lagoon. Don't forget the sunscreen. Evening: Have sunset drinks on The Lagoon at La Playita, the drinks are ok, but the atmosphere is amazing. For dinner, check out the local favorites like: El Taco Loco or Katx.
Day 3 :
  • WELLNESS AT MIA BACALAR Morning: Visit Mia Bacalar for a day of wellness. Start your morning with SUP yoga at sunrise in the lagoon, followed by Mayan inspired treatments at the Ixchel Spa. Reserve treatments in advance. Afternoon: Enjoy water activities such as wave running, or simply relax in a hammock on the dock. Order the guacamole and fresh ceviche. Evening: Check out Finisterre for dinner - note you’ll get the best lagoon views during the day. The menu offers Mediterranean Cuisine and pizzas, craft cocktails and vegan friendly options. Return to Hotel Makaaba.
Day 4 :
  • EXPLORE BACALAR'S NATURAL BEAUTY Morning: Take a day trip to discover more of Bacalar’s natural wonders. Visit secluded spots around the lagoon by kayak or boat. If you’re a scuba diver, check out Cenote Azul. While the color of this section is darker as compared to other parts of Bacalar Lagoon, the water is clean and pure and it’s one of the deepest cenotes in Riviera Maya. Afternoon: Return to hotel and see if the owner is around to share more about their fully sustainable water system, gardens and the endangered stingless bees they’re protecting. Evening: Bacalar is Bohemian chic, but in general quite casual. Check out the "high end" Nixtamal. Highly recommend ordering the full lobster.
Day 5 :
  • MAYAN RUINS + DEPARTURE Morning: Close to Bacalar you will find Kohunlich, a Mayan archaeological site in the middle of the jungle that is worth exploring before you check out and depart.
