The Northern coast of Italy is an absolute must-see. We mostly stayed in Santa Margherita and Rapallo, which we absolutely loved. I would recommend staying in Santa Margherita over Portofino and visiting Portofino during the day. Portofino is really small and very touristy. I also had the best gelato of my LIFE in Santa Margherita and one of the best meals we had on this trip was in Rapallo (shoutout Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli in Rapallo- you HAVE to go). I recommend taking the ferry to Portofino because it really is one of the most beautiful little towns I’ve ever been to. You won’t need more than a few hours for shopping and bopping around. We chose not to eat there because we found the prices outrageous. We stayed at the Excelsior Palace hotel in Santa Margherita and it was one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at. Pretty much perfection. We had the breakfast included and it was a delicious buffet style breakfast with jaw dropping views. This hotel is not to be missed! After a few days bopping around Portofino, we decided to continue our journey to the Cinque Terre area. Monterosso is the flattest of the towns, and is situation on miles of beautiful beach. If we went back, we would definitely stay there! It’s the largest town and has most of the nicer hotels, plus the restaurants were amazing and the shopping was even better.
